Additionally, the finalists had a chance to communicate with successful diplomats, business leaders, and representatives from government and public organizations.

Addressing the grant winners, Victor Pinchuk stated: “This Program is our joint investment in the future of the country. We do it jointly with the students present here. We are partners: each of us makes a contribution; each of us expects certain dividends. We will equally share the responsibility for the outcome. The outcome is success of Ukraine that begins from your personal success”.

Talking with winners he also added: “It is sad when young people leave the country. But it is a different case this time. In this case, it is not about brain drain, but it is about brain sharpening. Focusing it on bringing new civilization genes you are going to implant here having got the right education”.

Judith Gardiner, Deputy Head of Mission, British Embassy: «This is very much a domestic Ukrainian initiative. It is a very positive symbol of the investment Ukraine is making in itself. I agree that the impact of the students is huge when they come back to their countries. It is not just beneficial for Ukrainians, Czechs, Polish or Lithuanians; it is also a hugely beneficial for us in the UK. I am confident that this pilot project will be a great success».

The winners of the first competition commenced their education in autumn 2010 at the Universities of Great Britain (8 students), the USA (3 students), Sweden (3 students), Switzerland (2 students) and Germany (1 student) in the fields   of law (9 students), environment and ecology (5 students), public administration (2 students) and sport management (1 student).
